National Geographic, the fun little magazine that’s probably piled chin-high in your parents’ garage, recently put out this cute little video explaining that by the end of 2011 there will be 7 billion people on Earth, which is pretty impressive when you consider there were only about 1 billion people on Earth 200 years ago. Go mankind! Oh wait, there is that little issue of sustainability. As the helpful video explains, 5 percent of the global population consumes 23 percent of the world’s energy. With the population looking to expand to 9 billion by 2045 and more developing countries like China and India reaching for that “American dream” (car, house, leopard Snuggie for your dog, etc.), we’re either going to have to figure out a way to cut back on consumption or wait for Val Kilmer to discover cold fusion.
